Maple Sugar Houses
In Spring, all the maple trees in Maine start to release their sweet nectar. Across the state, plastic hoses protrude from maple trees, like a strange appendage, draining the sap from the trees into distinct covered buckets below. (Sap runs best when temperatures drop into the 20s at night and warm up into the 40s during the day.) All the sap that is collected will be boiled down and turned into delicious, golden, maple syrup.
